What is datababes ?
writerbabes (08.11.2002)

Datababes is a non-commercial online community and online magazine, spreading its activities into real-world to establish and run cultural events in the region of Lake Constance in Southern Germany. Our aim is to connect different people and bundle their activities. Datababes' mission is to provide a virtual and real-world space to realize and exchange ideas, party together and to learn from each other. It is also a showcase for your work (music, art, photography, poetry), for your opinion about music, films, books and whatever you are interested in. As we try to narrow the gap between consumers and producers we want to create an environment, where everybody can take part in starting parties, organizing exhibitions, writing articles….
We try to avoid commercial pressure in our work and organize and run our events in a non-profit-philosophy to ensure a certain artistic freedom for our output. Founded in winter 2000, Datababes has a strong focus on music - especially on creating a network between DJs, producers and bookers from different backgrounds. Datababes is interested to present and feature the best of electronic dance- and listening music: techno, drum and bass, electro, minimal, oldskool and nu skool and all varieties of electronic freestyle. We try to expand the borders and try to bring music, art and party together: Currently we are running two party-series on a regular basis.
First, the Datababes - Party, where we combine art exposition and party pleasure featuring innovative electronic music, DJs and live acts (pictures here). Datababes-Parties work as platforms, offering artists from our network to present their work (e.g. photography, video art, installations …) to the public in an enjoyable and stimulating atmosphere. The second party-series is "Treibgut", a monthly showcase for young DJs with a wide range of sounds from Minimal Techno to Dancehall and Nu Skool Breaks.
Our vision is a social network to create a pool of knowledge and synergy-effects between different individuals. The connecting element is our website with the online community, that serves as a platform and trigger to establish and maintain interaction between all people interested or involved in our project. At the same time the website is an online journal and playground for your ideas and thoughts. Until December 2002 Datababes.org has hosted more than 20 events in different locations, established two regular party-series, produced flyers and posters in large numbers, collaborated with bookers, clubowners, cinemas, artists and bands, sent its dj-team to parties all around the region and two different countries, published more than 250 online articles and grew a community of about 70 community members. As an established and still completely independent player we will celebrate in Dezember 2002 our second year of existence.

> As the site is presented in german language, it might be half the pleasure for international visitors to check out the site, but try just to explore, see some pictures, read some names, listen to some mp3s....

> Datababes is now in the conceptual stage of redesign...after nearly 2 years we learned some lessons and its now time to fix the bugs and refine our look & feel.....
Await a major site update in spring 2003 including an new branding, a community visualisation tool and the absence of some categories that remained digital desert.

Like I said last year below: We will definitely be back there next year!

Again it was such a great experience to be part of one the most remarkable festivals in whole Europe. Have a look at some pictures and some reviews here. We will now try to establish a regular exchange of DJs to Belgrade... I hope to have some good news to tell you here soon.

datababes@exit-festival 2002 - back in Germany
killerPOKE (15.07.2002)

Just some short notes here as we just came back and still have to get settled a bit and check our photo, video and text material. There will be some intense coverage on the EXIT-Festival here, but we will need some time.

For all those who have missed it:
the EXIT was the most impressive festival I have ever been able to attend to. The atmosphere, the young people of Serbia, the location, just everything was different but much better than expected and we have to thank all the people there who welcomed us so warmly and have given us so much positive feedback and impressed us with their hospitality, honesty and their open minds.
Thanks a lot!

We will definitely be back there next year!

For all foreign visitors: as our pages are still mostly in German you will not find much information about our artists attending the EXIT. We are workin on that. Anyhow you might check our Community, where most of them are featured or check the Producer or DJ section. Maybe you might want to leave some questions, greetings and shouts in our Forum aswell...
There are some reports: in Outerbabes you will find reports, pictures and little movies about our time at the EXIT. Pictures and a review you see at the Partyreview ...

In March 2002 members of "datababes" and "Multitrimmer" travelled to Novi Sad to lay the foundations for a cooperation and cultural exchange with the local party and art-scene and to meet people living and working there.

Our home base in Novi Sad was "hammer creative", an advertisement agency which played an important role in the Serbian anti-Milosevic-movement. "Hammer" was part of a media network in Serbia, which supported the otpor-movement. They launched an election campaign to motivate the Serbian youth to vote against Milosevic.
Bert Binnig spend three months in 2000 at Hammer for a practical (article in english about his stay in Novi Sad).
It was just the time of the election and the fall of milosevic. This was the main goal of the EXIT-festival. First held in 2000 it was an improvised 100 day-countdown towards the election. Packed with music, theatre, discussions etc it took place at the beach of the Danube river.
After the turnover in Serbia dramatic changes took place. With full support of the city of Novi Sad, the new government, local and national TV-stations the EXIT-festival 2001 became much bigger and moved to Pedrovaradin. This old fortress is the new home since then. The festival is an important national topic, a window to the world after ten years of isolation. The slogan was: "Serbia - are you ready for the future?" - and indeed it seems like they are. For more information visit: http://www.exitfest.org (English version available).

Datababes-Members Florian Merkel and Bert Binnig plus Sebastian Müller, Susi schandelmaier and Silja Lorenz met with members of the EXIT-festival organization team and the idea of "reconaction" was born meaning the (re-)establishing of a virtual and physical bridge between Serbia and Europe. The contribution of "datababes" and "Multitrimmer" to the EXIT-festival is the second step in this direction. We will meet people in Serbia to exchange ideas and opinions about culture, art, music, virtual communities and possible projects in the future.
To symbolize this "reconaction" we will install an interactive light-installation to make this thought more physical - to influence each other, to exchange ideas, opinions and music.
The TREE-PROJECT:
The tree project is a pyhysical visualization of the reconaction idea. We will wrap and illuminate trees on the festival and give the visitors of the festival the option to influence the illumination of the trees. Two trees are the "Lightswitches" where visitors can push buttons to change the light. This will influence the third tree, where the light changes according to impulse given by the different "tree-users". With that installation we want to symbolize the aim of reconaction: We want to bring people together, to communicate and exchange. And we hope that people develop a positive influence on each other.

The second part of the "reconaction" will be the datababes-night on the progressive-stage of the EXIT-festival.
datababes.org in the mix - a soundclash from Germany
minimal, elektro, hip hop, NuSkool breaks, drum´n´bass,
techno and detroit.
